Domain Redirects (also known as domain forwarding) send anyone who visits your domain to a different website address you choose. You can set it up yourself in your TierraNet control panel in a few minutes using the Value-Added Services page.
Domain redirects also support HTTPS to HTTPS redirection, so visitors who type your domain with https:// are still forwarded to your destination site. Previously, this wasn't possible without first purchasing a hosting plan and an SSL certificate. Now it's included with the redirect.
This article walks you through the setup, explains how long changes take to appear, and tells you what to do if the redirect isn't working.
Before you begin
Have these ready, and make sure your domain uses our nameservers (see below):
- Your TierraNet login details, so you can log into your control panel.
- The full URL of the site you want your domain to redirect to (the destination), for example the address of your existing website.
Your domain must use TierraNet nameservers
URL redirects, and every other Value-Added Service we offer, only work when your domain points to our nameservers. If it points somewhere else, the redirect option won't take effect. Your domain should use one of the following pairs:
| Option | Nameserver 1 | Nameserver 2 |
|---|---|---|
| A | NS1.TIERRA.NET | NS2.TIERRA.NET |
| B | NS1.DOMAINDISCOVER.COM | NS2.DOMAINDISCOVER.COM |
Set up a domain redirect
- Log into your TierraNet control panel.
- Click DNS, then select DNS Home.
- Under Select domain to manage:, choose your domain from the dropdown menu of domains and click Go.
- At the bottom of the screen, open the Add Records For: dropdown menu, select Add a value-added service, and click Add.
- On the Value-Added Services page, select Redirect my domain to an existing URL, then enter the URL of the site you want visitors sent to.
- At the bottom of the page, click Preview Changes, review your entry, then click Confirm Changes.
How long it takes to work
Your redirect may not work right away. Changes to a domain's DNS can take 24 to 48 hours to finish propagating, meaning it takes that long for the update to reach all networks. During this time, some visitors may be redirected while others still see the old destination or no site at all.
If your domain still isn't redirecting properly after 48 hours, contact TierraNet Support for further help.
