Every email provider has Email Filters that work as virtual walls that block unsolicited, malicious code containing unwanted and virus-carrying emails from reaching the user's inbox. Although email filters exist to prevent spam, spam emails cannot be stopped entirely, but using these filters can help limit the risks that spam poses on your personal devices.
Generally, email filters use special algorithms to analyze an incoming email with multiple criteria to consider, including its similarity with emails you’d manually marked as spam earlier, common trigger words, content and design of the email, and so on. Then, the filters determine if the email will pass through and reach your inbox or stay in the email folder.
An email is scored based on various criteria for different types of emails using several algorithms. Each rule assigns a numerical score to measure its likelihood of being spam. If the score reaches a certain predefined amount, the email is marked as spam and blocked from heading any further.
