What is a domain name?

A domain name represents a specific location on the internet, typically, an IP address. Without domain names, we would have to try to remember a string of numbers to access a site online or send an email. Domain names are mapped to IP addresses using a system called DNS.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) currently manages the links between IP addresses and domain names. This allows us to access websites by typing in an easy-to-remember name, instead of a string of numbers.
